Josie O learns about stinging insects.

Josie and I were outside when she suddenly let out a yip and ran for me and the front door, in that order, whimpering and holding up her left front paw. She’s been interested in the bees and wasps, so I figured she got stung.

Once inside, she got in her bed and licked her paw while I got a Benadryl gelcap and poked it with a pin. Gave her about half a drop, mixed with some honey, and now she’s like Bill Murray when they gave him the truth serum in The Man Who Knew Too Little. (“Are you a member of our Frequent Renter’s club?”)

Don’t know what kind of bug it was, but the first-aid instructions are the same. Good thing it wasn’t her face, or we’d be at the vet right now. So far her paw isn’t swollen very much at all. For all I know, it was an ant.

  1. We had a dog get a swollen cheek from something, once. We never knew if he rubbed against something, ate something, or if something tried to eat him. A vet visit did result.

    1. When I was a kid, we lived in the country, in Missouri. The neighbor’s Shepherd-mix puppy got bit on the snout by a copperhead snake — not an uncommon occurrence for dogs in that area. His head really swelled up, but he got over it in a week. No vets were involved.

      Different time, different place.

  2. My Rottweiler got stung by a bee close to his eye a few summers ago, by about 2am, his eye was swollen shut and it was huge! Of course we ended up at the ER to have it looked at. They gave him a shot of Benadryl and had me follow it up with pill form at home. That was one expensive bee sting! I am a big dog lover and have two dogs of my own, Zeus and Lucky. They are so funny, loving, and snuggly! I love them with all of my heart and soul! My name is Melissa Crowley and I am on a mission to save my favorite dog! I have started a blog for my Rottweiler Zeus called Saving Zeus. He has a rare genetic disorder and we are trying to raise funds for the medical tests and treatment that he desperately needs. Also on my blog, I have funny stories and really cute photos of both of my boys. If you would like to make a donation or share our blog to help us save Zeus, or would just like a laugh after reading a funny story, visit my page. Since I am just getting started on my blog, there will be many more stories to come so check back every once in a while!

  3. Melissa, are you on Facebook? If you are, friend me (See the FB logo peeking over the right top of my blog page? That’s a direct link.) and send me a nice blurb about Zeus and a link to the donation page. I’ll pass it around. That stuff does very well on Facebook.

I love the name Zeus. My husband had a Golden Retriever named Thor when he was a kid.

    1. Thank you so much for sharing on facebook for me. I do have a face book acount and have started a saving Zeus face book page. If you want you can like our page and pass that on also. I will send you the link and things this evening, as for now I am off for a long day at work! Thank you agian for sharing and visiting my blog!
